Knitting in the north

A week in Henningsvær for knitters and crocheters who want long, uninterrupted hours with their hands busy. From November 16–22, 2026, the lodge is a shared base for project time, an optional indigo dyeing course with Lofoten Wool, sauna evenings, shared meals, and the kind of company that makes a difficult sleeve worth finishing.

November is the last of the light. The sun sits low and leaves early, the weather comes in off the sea, and the islands settle into the quiet weeks before the polar night. It is the season wool was made for here – and the reason the days indoors, with a project on your lap and the kettle on, feel earned rather than idle. Short walks, a swim if you are brave, and back to the work.

Dye with Lofoten Wool

Lofoten Wool opens their workshop in Stamsund, about an hour down the islands from Henningsvær, for a four-hour indigo dyeing course: dye your own yarn, and hear Ragnhild and the team on wool traditions in Lofoten and the story behind the company. The course runs for a group of three to six, costs 2750 kr per person, and is booked and paid directly with Lofoten Wool – our Community Resident coordinates the group and the timing during the week. Guests also get a special discount code for buying yarn at their shop.

How the week works

Like every Arctic Coliving theme week, this one is intentionally DIY. There is no fixed program and no teacher at the front of the room. Bring the project you have been putting off, work at your own pace, and use the group for the things a group is good for: reading a chart together, picking up a dropped stitch, arguing about yarn. Every activity, the dyeing course included, is optional.

What to bring

We didn’t need to tell you this, but bring your kit! And a warm jumper!

• Needles, hooks, stitch markers, scissors, and a tapestry needle
• A project in progress, or a pattern you want to start with local yarn
• Patterns downloaded or printed before you travel
• Warm layers and shoes for short walks between sessions
• A card for yarn, bought at Lofoten Wool with your guest discount

About Lofoten Wool

Wool from happy sheep! Lofoten Wool produces yarn and wool products from sheep in Lofoten and Northern Norway. We want to highlight and use wool, which is a wonderfully pure raw material. Wool is also elastic, holds its shape, and does not wrinkle. In addition, it is a 100% renewable resource.

Lofoten Wool's yarn is spun at Hillesvåg, north of Bergen, after first being sorted into natural sheep-colored shades at our own wool station here on Vestvågøy. At our workshop, we add silk thread and plant-dye the finished yarn to create vibrant, beautiful colors.We offer two main wool qualities: one from Norwegian White Sheep, and a double-coated wool from Old Norse sheep and Spæl sheep. Both are perfectly suited for knitting everything from mittens and neck warmers to sweaters.All our products are made of 100% pure, Norwegian wool.

All yarn, patterns and day trips / experiences with Lofoten Wool are not included and charged separately when visiting Lofoten Wool outside of Stamsund.
