A history of exploration

A history of exploration

Every winter for millennia, the wandering skrei, or Arctic migratory cod, have journeyed from the Barents Sea to spawn off Lofoten's rocky shores. Fishermen followed — men and boys alike set sail on treacherous waters in the darkness of the polar night, on the hunt for white gold.

Hung on racks in Arctic wind and pale sun, the dried stockfish needed no salt or packaging, yet kept for years. It fed the Vikings, fueled Hanseatic trade, and traveled around the globe during the age of European exploration. A simple fish from a remote land that shaped the modern world.
