A history of
community
In 1939, students from 20 different nations came together to build Mjรธlfjell Ungdomsherberge as the first volunteer built hostel of its kind. Near a remote railway deep in the mountains of western Norway, it was envisioned as a place to explore nature, adventure and collaborate.
After WWII, Mjรธlfjell welcomed a new generation of community during an era of rejuvenation that included building its own power plant. In 1947, Peer Lorentz Dahl painted the murals in our main lodge as inspired by the life of Norwegian Arctic explorer Fridtjof Nansen.
