Arctic Photography Week

A week in Lofoten with a camera and no schedule to keep. This isn’t a guided workshop — it’s a base to shoot from, on your own rhythm, alongside a few other people doing the same.

What’s out there

Everything worth shooting sits close together. The red rorbuer at Hamnøy and Sakrisøy, best caught from the bridge at first light, and a handful of low islands ringed by peaks that seem too big for them. The wide beaches, at Haukland and Uttakleiv, Flakstad and Ramberg, where mountains drop straight into the sea and the tropical white sand holds the sky. The old fishing village of Nusfjord, the road’s end of the earth at Å. It’s roughly three hours from the top of the islands to the bottom, so most of it is a short drive from the door. And your home base in Henningsvær – a gem in its own right.

The Arctic, the light

The reason people come. In winter, low sun rakes the peaks for hours and the midday sky turns a soft, blue that’s hard to find anywhere else — and on clear nights, the aurora. In summer, the sun never really sets, so golden hour stretches from late evening past midnight. The weather turns fast, from flat grey to a wall of light in minutes. You don’t plan for that. You show up and wait.

The wildlife, abound

Grab the telephoto. White-tailed sea eagles with wingspans near two and a half metres ride the fjord updrafts, and RIB safaris from Svolvær get you close enough to fill the frame. Otters work the shoreline while seabirds pack the cliffs. Offshore, minke, pilot, and fin whales move through these waters in the warmer months at the end of summer, sperm whales gather almost year-round off Andenes a day trip north, and in winter orcas and humpbacks chase the herring into the northern fjords, hunting in pods against snow and low Arctic light. When it comes together it’s the kind of frame you plan a trip around.

How the week works

Shoot when the light (or weather) is “good”, sleep when it isn’t. Between shoots, the house is the point: compare frames, trade edits and settings, sort out where to be at sunrise, and cook shared meals together. You set your own hours and pace. Come home with a stronger portfolio, new techniques from the people you meet, and a week of Arctic light you’ll keep turning back to. This theme week does not have a fixed program and defined by group objectives.
